Biella Alps and Moraine Amphitheater

FROM APRIL TO OCTOBER

The route takes in some of the most beautiful roads in the Upper Biella area and the entire moraine amphitheater in the Canavese area. The country is very panoramic and varied and requires a good degree of athletic fitness.

1st leg: Oasi Zegna Bielmonte - Lake Viverone (145 km).

Starting from the square in Bielmonte, we go down along the Panoramica Zegna road towards Valle Cervo. Having reached and passed through Biella, the route heads towards the Serra hill. On reaching the town of Sala Biellese, there is a very beautiful road, with very little traffic, through the birch woods typical of the moraine. After climbing to Andrate, where you can admire the glorious panorama across Valle d’Aosta and the Ivrea moraine amphitheater, there’s a splendid descent to the valley bottom and the gateway to Valle d’Aosta. After crossing the Dora Baltea the route follows the spurs of Val Chiusella to reach the right hand side of the horseshoe traced by the hills that form the amphitheater. In these hills we will take in Lake Candia, the beautiful Castello di Masino, originally the seat of the counts of Valperga (managed by FAI), Lake Viverone and Castello di Roppolo, with the eponymous wine cellars. You can choose to visit Castello di Masino and sleep in one of the numerous facilities around Lake Viverone.

2nd leg: Lago di Viverone - Oasi Zegna Bielmonte (87 km).

The route climbs back towards the town of Andrate along sections of the Via Francigena and then joins the Tracciolino, the magnificent panoramic road traversing the Biella Alps at mid height. On the way we’ll see the ancient Trappa monastery and the Graglia, Oropa (UNESCO heritage) and San Giovanni sanctuaries. From the Oropa Sanctuary we climb towards the Rosazza tunnel (1,488 m asl). Remember to bring lights: the tunnel is short but unlit. This brings us back into Valle Cervo and thence to Bielmonte. Before returning to Bielmonte it’s well worth visiting Rosazza, the “most mysterious village in Italy”.

This route can also be done in one day only by reducing the distance as indicated on the map.

1st leg: Oasi Zegna Bielmonte - Andrate (55 km).

2nd leg: Andrate - Castello di Masino  - Lago di Viverone (75 km).

3rd leg: Lago di Viverone  -  La Trappa (66 km)

4th leg: Santuario di Oropa - Oasi Zegna Bielmonte (36 km)
